Preparations for the opening of George W. Bush Elementary School for the 2016-’17 school year don’t just include construction. Wylie ISD officials have been looking for administration and faculty for the new school and recently named the principal.

Dr. Maricela Helm, a current Rockwall ISD principal, brings to the new school nearly 20 years of educational experience.

“I am most excited about building a school from the ground up,” she said. “Establishing its culture, working with a new team to determine the values of the school’s community, establishing traditions, and most importantly, shaping the expectations for every classroom to ensure that each student experiences a true love of learning and receives the education they deserve.”

Helm began teaching in Dallas ISD in 1998 following a career in broadcasting. Helm taught in Garland and Plano ISD before joining Rockwall ISD in 2010.

Helm is also the co-founder and facilitator of Rockwall ISDs Teacher Institute and was named an H-E-B Excellence in Leadership Finalist as one of the Top 25 Principals in Texas Public Education.

Helm has a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State and a master’s and doctorate from Texas A&M Commerce.

Bush Elementary will be the district’s 11th elementary school and 20th campus. The school’s estimated capacity is 900 elementary students.
